The 'Northampton Musical Society' was established in 1896 as a combination of both a choir and an orchestra. Over the years, the
choir evolved under the leadership of several notable conductors, including Charles J. King, who was the organist of St Matthew's
Church during the early twentieth century. Under King's direction and that of his successors, the choir flourished, taking on
increasingly substantial and ambitious choral works.
During this period, the choir's dedication and musical excellence saw it grow in both size and reputation. It became widely
regarded as a prestigious choral group in the region, known for delivering high-quality performances of major works. This
strong foundation paved the way for the choir's continued success, establishing a proud tradition of choral music in Northampton
that thrives to this day.
